Expanding Options for Effective Tinnitus Management

Expanding Options for Effective Tinnitus Management

By: Laura Winther Balling, Sueli Caporali, Daniel Parker, Anne Mette Jeppesen, and Dana Helmink

Published in Hearing Review, February 2023

This article from Hearing Review shows the positive effects of Widex SoundRelax on tinnitus. Like the previous generation of fractal tones (Widex Zen), use of Widex SoundRelax is associated with significant improvements in tinnitus severity. The article reports the results of an ongoing longitudinal study that shows that tinnitus severity is reduced for people listening to these sounds. Together with previous evidence, this shows Widex SoundRelax to be a strong option for tinnitus treatment, as well as support for relaxation, concentration, and well-being for all users.

Sound Quality and Comfort with Instant Ear-Tips: From the Lab to Real Life

By: Laura Winther Balling, Sueli Caporali and Jens Cubick

WidexPress 49, January 2023

This article documents the careful research that was conducted before launching the new instant ear-tip portfolio with Widex Moment Sheer™. Measurements in the lab showed that the new ear-tip portfolio offers more closed options, increasing the possibility to fit patients with instant ear-tips. In a real life study following up on this, HCPs rated the new ear-tip portfolio very highly in terms of key parameters like fit to target and general satisfaction, while end users showed excellent satisfaction with both sound quality and comfort.

Empowering Patients with Personalized Compression

By Laura Winther Balling, Anne Mette Jeppesen, Jens Brehm Bagger Nielsen, and Dana Helmink

Published in Hearing Review, November 4, 2022

This article presents the strong case for personalization of compression for the individual hearing aid user, reviewing research that indicates large variation between individuals and situations in preferences and performance. Such personalization has, until now, been limited to complicated adjustments of gain and compression in the fitting software. In contrast, the new Widex MySound enables the user to personalize compression in a completely new way.

Hearing aid delay in open-fit devices: Preferred sound quality in listeners with normal and impaired hearing

By Dina Lelic, Georg Stiefenhofer, Ellen Lundorff, and Tobias Neher

Published in JASA Express Letters, October 2022

A key factor influencing sound quality in open-fit hearing aids is the processing delay. Previously, the delay limit needed for ensuring optimal (rather than tolerable) sound quality has not been established. Therefore, this article investigates the relationship between preferred sound quality and five processing delays ranging from 0.5 to 10 ms in listeners with normal and impaired hearing. The listeners with normal hearing showed a strong preference for the shortest delay. For the listeners with impaired hearing, participants with mild hearing losses below 2 kHz also preferred the shortest delay. This adds to other evidence indicating the advantages of the ultra-low delay Widex PureSound program for hearing aid users with mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

Are Hearing Aids the Answer to Reducing Stress and Improving Well-Being?

By Laura Winther Balling, Sueli Caporali, Daniel Parker, Anne Mette Jeppesen, and Dana Helmink.

Published in  Hearing Review, August 2, 2022, 29(8), pp.24-27

Based on a strong heritage in tinnitus relief, Widex SoundRelax offers new sounds generated in the hearing aid that combine unique fractal music with modulated wave-like sounds. This article reports a study showing the potential of Widex SoundRelax to support hearing aid users’ relaxation, concentration, and well-being. This is intended to combat stress and sustain health for users with and without tinnitus.

Low Processing Delay Preserves Natural Cues and Improves Spatial Perception in Hearing Aids

By Petri Korhonen, Francis Kuk, Chris Slugocki, and Greg Ellis

Published in HearingReview, June 2022

Wearers of Widex PureSound report that sounds feel “more three-dimensional” and as “having more layers”. This article explores the effects of reverberation on listening with hearing aids and explains why the processing delay in the hearing aid may affect the listener’s experience of the space around them. It also reports an experiment that shows better discrimination of listening positions with the ZeroDelay PureSound program than with standard-delay hearing aids.

The Acoustics of Instant Ear Tips and Their Implications for Hearing-Aid Fitting

By Jens Cubick, Sueli Caporali, Dina Lelic, Jasmina Catic, Anne Vikær Damsgaard, Steen Rose, Terri Ives, and Erik Schmidt

Published in EAR and HEARING, June 23, 2022

This peer-reviewed article investigates how much the acoustics of instant ear-tips varies between individual users and between separate insertions for the same user. The results show high variability between individuals in both vent effect (how much sound escapes the ear through venting and leakage) and real-ear occluded insertion gain (how much direct sound can enter the ear with a given ear-tip). This high variability is an important argument for the TruAcoustics™ algorithm in Compass GPS™, which adjusts gain to the acoustics of the individual ear canal, rather than assuming averages that may be wrong for the unique user. For the individual user, the article shows stable results across multiple insertions, which means that once an individualized fit is conducted with TruAcoustics, this can be expected to be stable also in real life.

Hearing-Aid Directionality Improves Neural Speech Tracking in Older Hearing-Impaired Listeners

By Eline Borch Petersen

Published in Sage journals, June 22,2022

This peer-reviewed study shows how directional processing in Widex Moment™ hearing aids improved neural speech tracking in a participant group of 11 older hearing aid users. The study used EEG data to investigate how well the speech signal was reconstructed neurally, comparing listening to speech in quiet with listening to speech in noise with and without directionality. The results show that reconstructing of the to-be-attended speech improved significantly when directionality was applied, as well as when removing background noise entirely. The study also shows improved task performance with than without directionality, but no significant difference in subjective ratings of listening effort. Together, these results indicate that hearing-aid signal processing impacts the neural processing of sounds and that neural speech tracking is indicative of the benefits associated with applying hearing-aid processing algorithms.
